The new Lightroom Classic has added range masks to the graduated filter tools. With a range mask you can adjust what parts of the underlying immature is altered. The masking can be done either on the basis of the color of theĀ  pixels beneath or their luminosity.

This is a picture straight from the camera. Nothing done to it at all.

Here I added a graduated filter which dropped the exposure by about 3 stops, added a color overlay, and set Dehaze to 100, which brought out the shadows on the walls. However the singer's face is lost in the process.

Here I enabled range masking and selected Luminance ad the method/ By restricting the  the range to about 68 and above, the singer's face is revealed once more. A few more tweaks brought the shadows back.

Color overlays can quickly change the atmosphere. :-)
